It was painful. It was worth it.
And all the time they stuck the knife in
Pulled it up and twist it around

Inside: My ten* desert island discs with some biographical info why.
Write-in: What was the first album you ever owned?

[* Ok, twelve]

1. Parallel Lines Blondie
The first album I ever owned. A present from my mum and dad, probably Christmas 1978.

2. Moving Waves Focus
My brother and I had very different musical tastes growing up. We detested each other's music. Moving Waves was my dad's, but my brother played it constantly. I must have been tortured by this a few hundred times so know it off by heart. Years have passed and I recently bought a copy after seeing Focus on Sounds of the Seventies on TV. It is actually Scando-rock-tastic.

3. Street Sounds Electro 1 Various
Up until a school friend lent me a tape of Electro 1, my musical tastes were pretty mainstream. I rarely even heard music that wasn't in the top 40. This introduction to hip-hop that wasn't of the pop chart variety changed things forever.

4. Meat is Murder The Smiths
First Smiths album I owned. Was converted by my first gf. My time at university was spent hiding under a giant quiff because of her.

5. Yo Bum Rush the Show Public Enemy
The best hip-hop act ever. Should qualify for any top ten of best rock and roll groups. Proved that hip-hop wasn't just about throwing down but could be serious.

6. Friends The Bolshoi
Trevor Tanner gets pissed off that he was brought up an abused catholic. I wasn't either catholic or abused, but could still empathise in the midst of my teenage angst years. I actually got to see The Bolshoi some time in the early 90s. Old and bald.

7. Blue Joni Mitchell
Mitchell's best album. Soaring heights and plumbing depths of despair, the album charts the progress of relationships from the anticiaption and hope of the singleton to the emptiness and cynicismof looking back on lost love. Beats listening to The Smith yet again when you're feeling cynical about love and stuff.

8. From Her to Eternity Nick cave and the Bad Seeds
Nick stops puking his guts up after the Birthday party split and settles into ripping religion, death, sex and the American south to shreds.

9. The Music The Music
Psychedelic rock for the 21st century. I'd run out of superlative cliches if I tried to describe this. If you like swirling guitars, you'll love this.

10. The Revolution Will Not Be Televised Gil Scott-Heron
Jazz, soul, embryonic hip-hop. One of the greatest unsung artists.

11. Devil is a Girl lab
The best Scandinavian guitar pop ever. Probably. Lifts me up anyway.

12. Horses Patti Smith
You can either view this as pretentious arty wank or twisted genius. I fall into the latter camp. Every track a work worth more than the output of most artists alone, the recycling of themes ties the whole together as one big trip that makes me want to punch anyone who dares interrupt me while I'm listening. Shouldn't be a problem marooned alone on a desert island.

The first album I bought by georgeha (2.00 / 0) #1 Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 11:41:46 AM EST
was either Queen's News of the World, or Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell. I don't know if I can put together a top ten desert island list.

I could have listed more by Dr H0ffm4n (2.00 / 0) #3 Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 11:48:38 AM EST
It was supposed to be ten but then the last two crept in as they meant more than some I had listed but I couldn't delete any. If I actually looked through my music collection I would probably have run to a lot more.

I am shocked.

Whippo: I think it was a Motley Crue album that I bought when I was 12.

Maybe I'll do a top 10 sometime. It would be all electronic stuff.

When I'm imprisoned as an enemy combatant, will you blog about it?

You get one bite and you have to live with that choice for a long, long time. I was disappointed that my choices were not more varied, but I had to stop somewhere.

First album ever owned... by andymurd (2.00 / 0) #5 Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 12:14:09 PM EST
was some kind of greatest hits of the 70s thing bought from a jumble sale. Don't remember exactly, but it did have a T-Rex track on there, as well as a lot of crap.

First brand new album I bought was 19 by Paul Hardcastle.

I feel slightly dirty after confessing these facts.

First Album I ever owned was the Jungle Book which included the story book to read along with the Album playing.  My favorite song off that album "I Wan'na Be Like You" with "The Bare Necessities" as a close second.

"The Wolfman's got nards!"

a friend gave me a Hall & Oats album.  I really care less about them but my friend, Sally, really liked them and thought I would too.  The first album I bought myself was Thriller by Michael Jackson.

Cardiacs by Dr Thrustgood (2.00 / 0) #8 Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 01:14:16 PM EST
A little man and a house and the whole world window.

About ten albums worth of music ideas wound into each song. More people should know them.

I'm not sure what the first album I had was, but the first one I bought with my own money was either James Gang Rides Again or Who's Next (I forget which, but I'm pretty sure it was James Gang). I had some classical albums before that, but I don't think I bought them with my own money.

I'll have to make a list of marooned on an island albums. I'm not sure I can do it though.

James Gang... by Dr H0ffm4n (2.00 / 0) #14 Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 02:34:06 PM EST
Hmm, not heard of them. But Joe Walsh already got a mention here today. I may have to check them out.

James Gang was Joe Walsh's original band from Cleveland. The big pre-Eagles hits you associate with Joe Walsh are about 50% James Gang, 50% Solo.

Funk #48
Funk #49
Tend My Garden
Bomber
There I Go Again
Woman
Walk Away
Ashes, the Rain and I
Midnight Man
Meadows

were all James Gang hits.

Try this.

I don't know any of those songs either. Maybe they weren't big in UKia. Have added that to my wishlist. Seeing as a lot of our film tastes are similar it'll be an interesting experiment to see if that translates to music too.

on Patty Smith and Joni Mitchell.  Beyond that, I'd probably have (in no particular order):

Genesis - Trick of the Tail
King Crimson - Young Person's Guide to King Crimson
King Crimson - Three of a Perfect Pair
Eno - Before and After Science
Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain By Strategy
Bach - (some nice collection of organ preludes and fuges)
Hildegaard Von Bingen  - A Feather on the Breath of God
Miles Davis - Blue

Genesis have been truly ruined for me. Not by themselves, nor smug-git collins, but by being first introduced to Marillian, otherwise known as the Genesis Tribute Band.

Bastards.

And for some reason, Trick of the Tail is the only Genesis I can imagine wanting, primarily for the song Squonk.

If you don't stand up, you don't stand a chance.

At least to my knowledge.   I saw a Marillion album once in a record store long ago, and it looked too twee to buy (this from someone who was buying old Mott the Hoople at the time...).

Ladies of the Road is not in my KC collection, but would probably like.

And, um, I've never seen you so typo-full.  Laphroiag?

Yes, may have had a few that night, fun times with keyboards.

Ladies of the Road is fab, if nothing else for being split into two CDs: CD 1 containing misc live sets including the 40-second rendition I rave about above; and CD 2, 10 guitar solos from 21st century... stiched together to give an Uber-prog guitar solo. King Crimson with a sense of humour... shome mishtake shurely?

Y'see, this is what happens when you turn your back on prog and start listening to Amon Duul II; damn these pretentious tricksters!

Thanks, by the way!

My fave line is the "Sit back and have some fun/ and tap your foot in twenty-one."

If you think the lyrics are funny, you should hear it in four part harmony.

I'm So Far From Cool by Christopher Robin was Murdered (2.00 / 0) #24 Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 08:36:04 PM EST
My first album might well have been Kiss's "Love Gun." I couldn't say now whether it was a gift or I paid for it myself.

The first tape I ever bought was The DOC's "Nobody Does It Better." The DOC is the now almost completely forgotten Texan member of NWA. He appears briefly at the beginning of "Parental Discretion Iz Advised" on "Straight Outta Compton." The album was, in retrospect, notable for Dre's production – a taste of the minimalist, funky sound he'd later slather over hundreds California rap acts.

The first CD might have been The Charlatans UK "Some Friendly."

First album by creo (2.00 / 0) #25 Wed Aug 10, 2005 at 11:52:47 PM EST
was either Dire Straits (self titled) or Replicas by Tubeway Army.

Strange, because growing up with the Aussie pub scene I was more into Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Angels, Rose tattoo, AC/DC  - that sort of thing.

Cheers

first "tape" was a Neil Diamond 8-Track.  Don't remember which one but it had the "America" song on it.
Kind of explains why I liked The Monkeys so much in highschool now.  (Thanks a lot MTV marathon).
